What we are building, and why

Almost every account a person has is really a row in somebody else's database. The password protects the row; it does not make the row yours. When that database is breached, sold, or handed over, the person it describes finds out last.

We think the fix is structural. An identity should be created where the person is — inside their own device's secure hardware — and everything built on top of it should inherit that property. So ORBLINK generates your key in the phone's secure element, where it cannot be exported, and uses it for everything: who you are to the people you talk to, what you can prove about yourself, and the proof that travels with a payment you authorise.

The consequence we accept is that we cannot help you in the ways a custodial service can. We cannot read your messages, reset your identity, or hand your history to anyone who asks, because we do not hold the keys. We would rather carry that cost than hold a door we could be compelled to open.

The footprint argument

One feature in ORBLINK is there to make the case rather than to sell a subscription. The footprint check shows you how much of your own information a stranger can assemble from nothing but your phone number — in seconds, for a few cents. People should know how cheap that is. It only ever runs on an address you have already proven you own.

Where ORBLINK sits

ORBLINK is the first product of the ORBIS.ID platform — a self-sovereign identity system in which the credentials live on the holder's device rather than in a provider's directory. ORBLINK is the consumer front door to it: communication first, because that is what people open every day, with the identity underneath doing the work.

Status, stated plainly

ORBLINK is in active development on iPhone and Android, used daily by our own team and by testers. We keep an honest account of what exists on the features page, including the gaps.
